Five films, one tangled timeline

What began as an adaptation of La Planète des singes, the novel by The Bridge on the River Kwai author Pierre Boulle, grew into a saga that loops back on itself in ingenious ways. The Chronicles gives every film its own chapter, exploring the production, the people and the part each played in the bigger picture:

• Planet of the Apes (1968) – Taylor and his fellow astronauts crash-land on an unknown world, and he soon finds himself caged, silenced by a throat wound and at the mercy of the orangutan scientist Dr Zaius. Director Franklin J Schaffner delivered a thrilling, thought-provoking adventure that still packs a punch.
• Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) – Dispatched to find the missing Taylor, fellow astronaut Brent discovers the gorillas are spoiling for war and that the ruins beneath the desert conceal a secret all their own.
• Escape From the Planet of the Apes (1971) – Zira, Cornelius and Dr Milo splash down on 1970s Earth, charming the press and public while a wary government begins to fear what their arrival could mean for mankind.
• Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) – By 1991, apes have become domestic servants in a city run with an iron fist, and a young chimpanzee called Caesar is quietly preparing to lead a revolt.
• Battle For the Planet of the Apes (1973) – In the aftermath of nuclear devastation, Caesar’s community of apes and humans must decide whether history is doomed to repeat itself. Look out for John Huston as the orangutan Lawgiver.

The accompanying features dig deep into how each film came together. Discover how Rod Serling’s early drafts shaped the original’s famous twist, how the apes’ elaborate make-up transformed life on set for the cast, and how Leonard Rosenman’s jagged, modernist music gave Beneath its unnerving edge. Later chapters explore the move to cheaper, contemporary settings, the Century City locations that doubled for a futuristic metropolis in Conquest, and the tense preview screening that led to that film’s ending being hastily reworked.
