What music they make.” Few lines in cinema have cast quite so long a shadow, and now the film that gave them to us has become a novel worthy of the finest shelf in the house. The Dracula hardback novelisation tells the whole of Universal’s 1931 masterpiece as gripping fiction, from a moonless mountain road in Transylvania to the vaults beneath an English abbey, over 104 pages generously illustrated with more than 100 stills, many never used before. Signed by Nige Burton and Jamie Jones and limited to just 50 numbered copies worldwide, this casebound edition is built to last a lifetime and comes with a FREE set of postcards.

Dracula 1931 Novelisation Signed Hardback cover with montage of characters

A lease, a voyage and a stranger in the fog

It begins with paperwork. Renfield, a conscientious young clerk eager to impress his firm, travels east to have a nobleman sign for Carfax Abbey, and he is the last person to take the villagers’ talk of vampires seriously. By the time the Count’s chartered ship slides into Whitby harbour with a dead captain lashed to the wheel, Renfield’s world has shrunk to flies, spiders and a master’s promises, and a very courteous foreigner is making himself at home among the Sewards and their friends. Tod Browning’s film, shot at Universal with Karl Freund behind the camera and the Broadway Count, Bela Lugosi, in the role that would define him, was the picture that launched the studio’s great run of horror classics.

Prose to lose yourself in

Our aim was simple: a beautifully written novel you’ll want to read in a single sitting. The film’s famous lines are all at home here, and around them the story is told in a rich, unhurried style that nods to the Gothic tradition while remaining easy and absorbing to read. Step inside the minds of the people caught up in the Count’s designs and you’ll understand what drives them at every turn – though Dracula himself remains a mystery, glimpsed only as others see him. Better still, the book lets you see what the film only hinted at, from the storm-lashed hold of the Vesta to Van Helsing alone in a darkened study, filling in all those moments that happened just out of shot.

Every performance, remembered on the page

The characters are written to match the performances that made them famous. Lugosi’s slow, hypnotic drawl and Dwight Frye’s high, unravelling giggle are both there on the page, along with the ethereal fragility of Helen Chandler’s Mina and the decent, quick-tempered loyalty of David Manners’ John Harker. Edward Van Sloan brings his precise, old-world authority to Van Helsing, Herbert Bunston makes a gentle, bewildered Dr Seward and Frances Dade a dreamy, doomed Lucy, while Charles Gerrard’s Martin and Joan Standing’s no-nonsense nurse Briggs add their own touches of colour.

Bound for the long haul

This deluxe hardback is presented at A4 size (210mm x 297mm), its silk stock pages bound beneath an oversized image-wrap cover with an anti-scuff finish to keep it looking immaculate for years to come.

A gallery of stills, revived one by one

More than 100 stills accompany the text, many of them never used before, and each has been painstakingly restored by hand. Printed in full colour, the original black and white photography takes on a subtlety of tone that brings Charles D Hall’s magnificent sets vividly to life.

Pour yourself a glass of something very old – though perhaps not wine – spread your postcards out beside you and listen out for the wolves.
