How one ape movie became five

When Arthur P Jacobs first pitched a film about a planet of talking apes, Hollywood studios thought he’d lost his marbles. The phenomenal success that followed proved him right, and the Chronicles devotes a chapter to each of the films that kept the saga swinging:

• Planet of the Apes (1968) – Charlton Heston leads a doomed space mission to a planet where gorillas hunt on horseback and orangutans guard a sacred scripture. Leon Shamroy’s Panavision photography and Jerry Goldsmith’s percussive score helped make it a genuine event picture.
• Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) – With the ape army marching on the Forbidden Zone, astronaut Brent and the mute Nova head underground and stumble into a very different kind of civilisation.
• Escape From the Planet of the Apes (1971) – Stranded in Los Angeles, the chimpanzee couple Zira and Cornelius become the toast of the town, until an ambitious presidential science adviser starts asking awkward questions about the future.
• Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) – Roddy McDowall steps into the role of Caesar, a gifted chimp hidden among the ape servants of a harsh new world order, in a story with a fiercely political edge.
• Battle For the Planet of the Apes (1973) – Caesar struggles to hold together a fragile, shared society as hostile gorillas scheme from within and the radiation-scarred remnants of a ruined city gather outside.

The Chronicles’ features reveal the making of each movie in illuminating detail.
