Twin sisters, a fanatic’s crusade and a resurrected vampiress

Newly orphaned, the identical Gellhorn sisters – demure Maria and headstrong Frieda – come to live with their uncle Gustav Weil, a grim Puritan whose torch-lit ‘Brotherhood’ burns suspected witches without mercy. Frieda’s rebellious heart soon leads her to the castle of Count Karnstein, a bored nobleman steeped in black magic who has raised the long-dead Countess Mircalla and been reborn as a creature of the night. Innocence and corruption blur, and a reckoning gathers that we shall not spoil here. Helmed by John Hough and scripted by Tudor Gates for Hammer producers Harry Fine and Michael Style, the film completes a trio drawn from Sheridan Le Fanu’s 1872 tale Carmilla.
