"Dracula

From the Borgo Pass to Carfax Abbey

Estate agent Renfield has come all the way to Transylvania to close a deal on a ruined English abbey for a client nobody in the village will name without crossing themselves. What awaits him at the castle will cost him far more than his good sense, and before long a storm-battered schooner is carrying something very old towards England, where the fog-bound drawing-rooms of Dr Seward, his daughter Mina, her fiancé John Harker and their friend Lucy Weston make easy hunting. Only one man, the Dutch scholar Van Helsing, recognises the danger for what it is. Directed by Tod Browning for Universal, with a screenplay by Garrett Fort drawn from Hamilton Deane and John L Balderston’s stage play as well as Bram Stoker’s novel, the film opened in February 1931 and set Universal’s golden age of horror in motion.

Beautifully written and hard to put down

This isn’t a plot summary dressed up as a book – it’s a proper, page-turning novel that pulls you into the story and won’t let go. The film’s memorable dialogue is woven into prose that tips its hat to the Victorian Gothic of Stoker without ever imitating him. You’ll ride inside the characters’ heads, sharing Renfield’s prim professional pride and his slow, terrible unravelling, Mina’s dread and her guilty longing, and Van Helsing’s lonely certainty. The Count alone stays out of reach, seen only through the eyes of those he visits. And best of all, the novel conjures the things the camera never showed you but your imagination always filled in: the Vesta’s last voyage, the harbourside crowd at Whitby, a flower girl in the London fog and the Woman in White drifting across the heath.

The performances you know, brought to the page

Each character is drawn closely from the actor who played them, so the faces in your mind’s eye will be the right ones. There’s Bela Lugosi’s measured, unblinking Count, Dwight Frye’s journey from fussy, eager clerk to giggling madman, Helen Chandler’s wistful Mina and David Manners’ earnest, impatient Harker. Edward Van Sloan’s stubborn Van Helsing, Herbert Bunston’s kindly Dr Seward, Frances Dade’s romantic Lucy and Charles Gerrard’s long-suffering orderly Martin all have their moments, as do Michael Visaroff’s anxious innkeeper and Carla Laemmle’s guidebook-reading passenger, who speaks the film’s very first line.

Made to sit proudly on your shelf

This signed softback is printed on generous A4 pages (210mm x 297mm) and PUR bound, just like Classic Monsters of the Movies, with silk stock inner pages and a hard-wearing gloss laminated cover.

More than 100 stills, restored by hand

Over 100 stills from the film illustrate the story, so as you read you’ll be stepping straight onto those shadowy Universal sets. Every image has been restored and our full-colour printing process gives even the black and white photographs a richer depth of tone.

Draw the curtains, prop your art print where the candlelight can find it, and let the Count bid you welcome. Just don’t open the window, however stuffy the room gets.
